Corkbar: Drink More Wine

Red or White?…is what the waitress would ask me after I decided that instead of my regular cocktail, I would step up my sophistication level and drink some wine.

MJ and I recently became fans of wine but like most people that drink wine for the first time, we had no clue how to order it.  When the waitress would ask what kind of wine we wanted, we would say, “red”, then she would read out these complicated names, in which I would turn to her and nod at the “House Cabernet” selection because not only was the price affordable, but it was an actual name that i recognized.  With time I learned a few other trusty wines that friends would recommend and I got a little better at ordering it. The problem I found was that because wine was linked to some sort of sophistication level, it was a bit intimidating to even try it when you didn’t know what to try.

It wasn’t until recently that I learned a lot more about it.  Everyone kept mentioning the name “Corkbar” to me.  Most of my good friends that have been lofting in downtown religiously stay up to date with the new downtown restaurants, which LA desperately needs more of, and told me I had to check out this new spot.  “It’s super chill”, “It reminds me of the spots they have in Santa Barbara”, “You have to try their appetizers and wine, it is sooo good!”, they would say.

So we did, and in true “downtown” flair we trained it once again.  Hoped on the Los Angeles Subway, Blue Line towards the Staples Center (PICO stop), a few blocks from Corkbar.

“We created Corkbar with a simple mission in mind: re-create the California wine tasting experience.”-www.corkbar.com

We loved it! A nice size establishment bright and warm at the same time. Cool wood deco and wine modern shelving, “Wine Country meets chic”, says Caleb co-owner of Corkbar,  as he describes the decor.  The best part about it is you get the California wine experience for a GREAT price.  Their wine selection is categorized in their drink menu making it easy to maneuver through.  I personally called it the bible of California wines”, I was almost tempted to take one with me!  ”What I specifically liked was that it was not intimidating at all and anything goes sneakers and jeans, perfect for the train ride back, or the suit and the loose tie, perfect for the after work happy hour.”-Ella

I had the opportunity to sit and chat with one of Corkbar’s owners Caleb Wines (appropriate last name right?).  He shared the inspiration behind Corkbar, schooled me on the chemistry behind good wine, and he encouraged me not to shy away from the wine experience.  Caleb shared his thoughts on the foodie culture and his thoughts on eating socially….

What word would you use to describe the Corkbar menu?

“Eclectic”, he said.  You won’t find a complicated new gastronomic menu here he added, in other words u wont have to squint at your food and guess what it is? I asked, and as we both laughed about it he assured me i wouldn’t need to do that.

“We are dedicated to bring our love for wine to Southern California….70 wines by glass and dozens more by the bottle…a dozen artisanal beers and farmer’s market fresh food menu.” -Corkbar.com

This is when I knew that the owners behind Corkbar truly understood their consumers.  The “inspiration behind Corkbar”, Caleb added, “was to bring what we experienced on our vacations while wine tasting here to Los Angeles.   All the owners are from Los Angeles and if you are from L.A., you know there is nothing like Corkbar around.  Unlike other downtown chic bars where, “you can barely read the menu because of the lighting in there”, Caleb jokes, Corkbar serves the same quality food and drinks in a more RELAXED atmosphere.

Its nice to see downtown expand and when I asked Caleb how he felt about the foodie craze…

…he said, he loved it.  The best part of L.A. food is you can eat great tasting food straight out of a “paper bag” or “ some fine china”. Whether it’s an expensive French cuisine where they serve art on a plate, that he also personally enjoys, or the classic the Tommy Burgers, people are enjoying the food experience and talking about it because “Good is Good” he added.

We ended with his thoughts of StomachLife’s take on enjoying food socially and how important that was to him.

He said “Corkbar is all about enjoying food socially.”  You never really see someone enjoying a whole bottle of wine if its not with friends.”  Wine is meant to be enjoyed with friends and family and that was the point of creating a place like Corkbar.  Their appetizers and entrées are big enough to share along with their wine.  The music is even hand picked by the owners, music they have enjoyed together and music that helps add to the atmosphere.  Selections of rock, jazz and latin play in the background as you enjoy the Corkbar social experience. ..and that is exactly what we did truly enjoyed the experience.

As we ended our interview Caleb ended with some wise words we can all use after a long day…

“When in Doubt drink more wine”- Caleb …..

Mas de Más Malo

Chef Robert Luna sits to chat with us about his journey into Mas Malo and his inspiration behind his Chicano menu.  C h i c a n o : A Mexican/American… a term of ethnic pride created in the 1960’s -1970s during the political movement.

I say Chicano menu because most people will go into MÀS MALO expecting to receive a full blown Mexican Affair but really the inspiration behind the restaurant is to celebrate the unique dishes of Eastsiders. Sure they serve your classic Mexican dishes  like tacos and salsas, guacamole and chips, but Mas Malo tries to bring you the traditional plates one may have grown up with.

It’s the tradition behind the food that I appreciated the most. Chef Robert and I reminisce on our mom’s gizados, beans, frijoles de la hoya con queso and other basic dishes that with little money fed our entire family.  It was true, creativity in the kitchen was the way of eating, we had limited ingredients but somehow the flavor was always incredible.  Robert jokes about the traditional Mole plate, and how it was just as good the DAY AFTER for lunch.  These classic dishes became our traditional every day dishes, that sometimes even lasted a couple of days, and the flavor was just as good.  Chile’s Rellenos, quesadillas, hand made tortillas, tacos tostados, birria, carne asada, are only a few other traditional plates that as Mexican Americans we have always incorporated into our meals.

Chef Robert shares it with all of LA, “its yours just as it is mine”, he says, this menu is for everyone.

Los Angeles is a melting pot as most say but sometimes we forget the hidden little corners, that make up a big part of the LA culture.  These different communities celebrate food and tradition and inspire most restaurant menus here in LA but few restaurants present and celebrate their tradition like MAS MALO.  The most unique part of Mas Malo is how many different kinds of people walk through those doors, it is a picture of what Los Angeles should be.

“Eating should be a communal experience”, says Chef Robert and we can’t help but agree with him.

If you want a taste of the Mexican American plates with exceptional and hospitable service, Mas Malo is the place to get it.  -Ella

Breakfast in the 50's

We always enjoy the history behind the eateries we visit.  There is always something intriguing about knowing that past generations once sat, and enjoyed the same food you did.  Although Cafe 50s was not built in the 50s, the  memorabilia in this cafe takes you back to those times.

Ella ordered her classic breakfast, (scrambled eggs, hot cakes, and turkey bacon)

And because of MJ and his current re-interest in turkey chili for breakfast he ordered the Texan Omelet with an  English muffin.

The rest of their menu has plenty of choices we preferred their breakfast choices but after taking a glimpse at their 40 + flavored milk shake menu, we may have to go back for lunch!  They also have daily specials which are listed in their monthly calendar.

After breakfast we couldn’t help but look around, all the memorabilia in the restaurant left us in a 50s trance.  Everything from playboy covers, to cool old movie posters, news articles, magazine covers, post cards, mad men advertisements, every inch of their wall was covered with a bit of history from that era.

A Place for Locals

At a recent media dinner we got to Superba Snack on an adventurous menu.  This menu is broken into sections and we got to taste a little of everything like their “Salumi & Charcuterie”section, “From our Backyards” showcasing dishes such as Eclectic Acres Greens with Superba Ricotta, and Jalapeno Dressing!  We tried their section “From our Hands to Yours” which quickly became Ella’s favorite, the Pork Belly Cubano with Smoked Ham, Mustard and Mayo on Ciabatta and the amazing BEER SANGRIA that we could not get enough of….

Eaters like MJ who may not be as adventurous with their food choices and are more traditional eaters will not be disappointed.  General Manager Alexander, originally from Chicago, shared with us his communal approach on food, made us feel at home and assured us that Superba Snack bar had something for all eaters.  He made sure we were satisfied with the menu choice and adjusted the menu for MJ’s particular palette.  To us a true communal approach on food means you learn to satisfy different palettes and we look forward to the full experience when Superba Snack Bar opens.

Chef Neroni has  plans to take a whimsical approach to pasta by smoking, spiking, infusing, and twisting a variety of different shapes, and will encourage guests to pair their pasta selections with snacks for a complete dining experience.  “Superba Snack Bar puts all of my passions under one roof: pasta, pig, and plenty of farmers’ market produce. I’m honored to be part of this project and am excited to debut our vision this summer.” - Neroni says.

What the Pho?

We’d been wanting to check out some good Vietnamese food and Blossom has been on our hit list for a while. Glad we finally got to check it out because they have plentiful portions and a good variety of fresh & healthy Vietnamese dishes. While boasting a clean-minimal design and good music, Blossom provides a communal vibe.

We could definitely eat at Blossom weekly… starting with their rice & noodle dishes, then making our way through the Pho options, sampling the imported beer selection and lastly, enjoying coffee & tea while “people watching”, downtown dwellers.

See ya soon Blossom we have some unfinished business…We’ll “rollover” for some fresh Spring Rolls soon.

I've heard lots of stories about The Doughnut Vault in Chicago with its now legendary blue door and even more legendary lines that snake around the corner no matter the weather. What makes these doughnuts special is the fact that all of the ingredients used in making them are high quality and prepared the same day they're served AND they're made by hand! Ice Cream with Sprinkles

The one thing I feel no one should ever have to say no to is ice cream.  On that note, when we were invited to join the Sprinkles Co-Founder, Candace Nelson, for some SPRINKLES ICECREAM and Champagne,  I had to say, “Yes...you bet I’ll be there….my idea of a great happy hour!”

Some people may say that the cupcake and ice cream fad is overrated, but in our opinion this is not just a fad.  Brands like Sprinkles are the pioneers to the pop up shops, bakeries, and pastry chefs who have decided to follow in the same footsteps; it is definitely something that is here to stay.  We feel that these movements are motivating local businesses to flourish, creating opportunities for other creative chefs.

Upon walking into the shop, I notice the quote on all the Sprinkles gear provided to their staff:  “Rodeo Drive is a giant butterscotch sundae.” -Andy Warhol.  I couldn't agree more.  We all know the success of Sprinkles Cupcakes, so if you are wondering whether or not Sprinkles Ice Cream is worth visiting, I think their reputation speaks for itself. Their ice cream shop is a modern take on your neighborhood ice cream shop; it’s fun and does a great job in representing real American Dessert.

Their flavors are so rich and each of them has a texture that surprises your every taste bud. The best part of my experience was the Sprinkles Cupcake and Ice Cream Combination—its pretty much insanely good.  I say "insane" because, as Candace and I pointed out, most women would probably be scared of it.  It was also a pleasure chatting with Candace about her take on desserts. She agrees on the notion that everyone should have a little something sweet after their meal.  She mentioned that if everyone just had A SMALL BITE of some real good "classic American dessert" like ice cream, a cookie, a brownie, etc… they would have just enough to satisfy their craving.  We did talk about the growing number of Gelato shops (which are also great), but Candace’s take on dessert is the old fashion Americano Sundae.

"We all know Sprinkles has inspired your creativity as a Chef but we want to know what childhood memories associated with food have inspired you?She was able to answer that quickly because her childhood memories are what inspired her to Co-found Sprinkles.  "While growing up overseas, there was nowhere to really get a real taste of American sweets or desserts”.  So she and her mother would bake in the kitchen.  These memories fed her growing love for American desserts.

"In the spirit of our #PrettyGirlsEat section and #LastMeal Segment, what would be Candace Nelson’s last meal?" And as a real pretty girl would say, she answers, “Pizza and a sundae,” her favorite dessert.  The combinations of flavors, the salty yet sweet taste, and the added textures in a sundae define true "Classic American Dessert."

"What’s next," I asked her, "donuts? She laughed and said, "Honestly, I didn't realize Sprinkles was going to be what it is today.” As she concentrated more on whole business side of Sprinkles, she knew it was time to do something fun again.  She found the perfect time to do it this year and she brought it back to basics, so naturally ice cream was next.  For now, while she leaves us wondering what her next move will be, at least we've got an ice cream cone to keep us happy.

Katana: Red Sun BBQ Garden

Summertime always calls for a BBQ, whether it be at a backyard  family get together or at a friend's pool party the thought of having summer without it feels like a #fail.  We were recently invited to partake in some more Japanese grill cooking, this is not your average backyard BBQ…

It’s Katana’s annual 10th Red Sun BBQ Garden, Red Sun being an appropriate name for the blazing *robata style grilling they offer.  The party is held every Sunday, last day for a fun day, on KATANA’s Patio overlooking the Sunset Strip.  A perfect Sunday afternoon, and while waiting for the sun to go down, we enjoyed some amazing food and drinks, and lets not forget the live DJ XTC, spinning some classic hits, from Hip Hop to Modern Pop Music.  Adding more to the already stylish patio, as soon as it gets dark they project movies off their main patio walls, the night we went they showed Kill Bill - one of our favorite Q.T. Japanese flicks.

The cool vibe  naturally brings in Hollywood’s hip crowd, perfect for Sunday nights which are a popular night for Los Angeles trendsetters.  There is a place for everyone on the patio, whether you are there for dinner with friends, a date or you simply want to do the traditional Hollywood Lounging with drinks. Katana’s Red Sun Menu is not at all intimidating and affordable, the quality of food brought to the table says it all.  As for their drinks, I say “Inochi Mizu” please and if you feel like being a little classy, Champagne and St. Germain it is,  the drink’s fresh flavors match the Sunday Afternoon.

The party takes place from 6 to 11:30 PM every week through Labor Day.  Our favorites are down below…

We were pleased to have been  invited to experience a heck of a feast at Soleto Trattoria & Pizza Bar in Downtown Los Angeles.  This past Tuesday, July 17, Soleto Trattoria & Pizza Bar opened its doors to the public.  This is one of the latest concepts from Innovative Dining Group (IDG), the creators of BOA Steakhouse, Sushi Roku, Katana, Robata Bar, and Delphine at W Hollywood. Chaya's Beer Garden

Three words Japanese + Beer + GardenCHAYA Downtown celebrates the summer season with its 3rd annual Japanese Beer Garden, in downtown Los Angeles.

Our stomachs once again were satisfied.  The smell alone led us from the top of 6th and Flower down the stairs, into Chaya’s outdoor terrace. We had been passing Chaya for years on our way into the City National bank or the Los Angeles Library building but never stopped to eat there.  A bit intimidated by the “suits” of Downtown L.A. we shied away from it, until this summer, and boy were we in for a treat! We boarded the local Los Angeles Subway (yes there is a subway in Downtown!!) and in 15minutes arrived to 7th and Metro stop.  As we walked down about a block and arrived to the building we saw and smelled the smoke off the grill.  Arriving to our surprise the outdoor terrace was was set up reminding us of a summer BBQ with a Japanese flair, lit up by lanterns around the terrace. Business men and women rolled up their sleeves and enjoyed tasteful Japanese craft beers and Yakitori and Kushiyaki Chicken Skewers off the grill.  We had the opportunity to meet Chef de Cuisine Kazuya Matsuoka, he greeted us with smiles, schooled us on the original grill and Japanese grilling techniques and off to our food adventure we went.

Overall atmosphere inside and decor is uniquely impressive.  Not to mention the price is affordable but attractive enough to impress your date. The cool part of this experience was saying goodbye to Chef de Cuisine Kazuya Matsuoka, as he and his family enjoyed his own menu. It is always a good sign when the chef eats off of his own menu when he punches out.

Dessert for Dinner

Ray’s & Stark Bar could not be more of an appropriate place to have Dessert for Dinner.  As many of you know we have no specific rules for traditional dinning.  Our taste buds have a life of their own.  We sometimes eat breakfast for dinner and dessert for breakfast…So with Ray’s constant evolution of their menu, we thought we should come back for more…

Ray’s & Stark Bar’s classic modern atmosphere inspires us to think outside the box and their menu encourages us to try something new.  We decided to begin our adventure with some Stark Bar Hot Seasonal Cocktails: Bobbin For Bourbon and Oaxacan Holiday.  Their “seasonal cocktails take inspiration from the flavors of the season, local produce, their Chef’s menu and the herbs that grow fresh in [their] garden.”

After CocktailsPastry Chef Josh Graves voted, “Best New Pastry Chef in LA”, in Angeleno Magazine, brought out a four course dessert tasting from his NEW RAY’S Dessert Menu.

In the spirit of the LACMA vibe, I could not help but look at the elements that made up our dessert.   The texture, color, and shapes helped our desserts resemble some sort of artistic rendition of a tiny master piece.

All the unique ingredients stood flavorful on their own but as soon as you dared to mix and infuse them all together, another incredible taste completely filled our palate.  What I enjoyed most was when the Chef took the time and detailed the natural gluten free ingredients, because of his consideration for some of his loved one’s needs.  I always say those little things, putting love in your cooking is always a key ingredient to a great meal.

I must say the most interesting part of my experience was when I went back to look through the colorful photographs of that night, my imagination continued to flow, I was begining to see interpretations of other food in my dessert! Ray’s and Stark Bar leaves an impression once again.

It’s definitively a place to discover a taste of delicious Los Angeles art.

Hole in One

We've been planning this for months and we finally did it! We went to Pie Hole. Yes, its only down the street from our office but for some reason it took weeks of planning to make this happen. Anyway, we decided to each get a pie and document our trip Instagram style!

Here's what we got:

Sonja - Veggie Puff Pocket Pie

Aisha - Mac n Cheese Pie

Marat - Chicken Pot Pie

Having tried all three, I can easily say that the Mac n Cheese Pie was definitely the winner, but I can definitely recommend all of them.
