Drink American

If you think that not enough products are made in the USA, you're obviously not drinking enough! Founded in 2012, Kings County makes handmade moonshine and bourbon out of the 113-year-old Paymaster Building in the Brooklyn Navy Yard and also happens to be the first licensed whiskey distillery in New York since Prohibition. Their moonshine is smooth and incredibly mellow, making it surprisingly enjoyable. Aside from the slightly sweet flavor and a rather mild burn (it's still moonshine folks), Kings County's Moonshine looks like it belongs on the front page of Designsperation.com with it's turn-of-the-century branding and unique look.

Quick tip: drink it straight, there's no need to mix such good moonshine.

Hudson Whiskey Punch

We asked our friends at Hudson Whiskey to create a delicious punch for us. WOW, did they deliver! This unique recipe is easy to make ahead of time to be served from pitchers or it can be made quickly one drink at a time. This is an especially great punch for those who might not normally drink whiskey, as it shows off it's great flavor while not being too strong. Enjoy!

Hudson Whiskey's UNIQUE Punch

  • one part Hudson Whiskey
  • one part Art in the Age Rhubarb Tea
  • two parts of the freshest grapefruit juice available
  • fresh lime juice to taste
  • muddled basil to taste
  • chill and serve over ice with a sprig of fresh basil

Sailor Jerry Spiced Cider Punch

Yes, its me again with another mixed drink recipe! This time, however, its very special. If you've been to our 2011 Holiday show and had a chance to try the famous Sailor Jerry Spiced Cider Punch, then you'll definitely want to try to make this en su casa (awkward translation: at your house). Anyway, lets get straight to the recipe:
Sailor Jerry Spiced Cider Punch
1 Part Sailor Jerry Rum
.5 Part Fresh Lime Juice
.5 Part Cinnamon/Clove/Orange Peel Simple Syrup*
.5 Part Apple Cider or Fresh Pressed Apple Juice
.25 Part Solerno Blood Orange Liqueur
Top with Champagne
Garnish with cinamon caramelized apple slices, lime wheel slices and/or orange wheel slices*
* Simple Syrup is simply 50:50 ratio of sugar + water. You can boil it to melt it, or just shake vigorously in a slosed container to fully mix. To make the syrup mentioned above, simple boil a pot of 50:50 ratio water/sugar and also add a cinnamon stick, a few cloved and a few slices of orange peel. Cool before using in punch.
* For garnish, in a frying pan, add a pat of butter, a sprinkle of cinnamon and brown sugar. Lay thin whole slices of an apple in the pot and let brown. Sprinkle with cinnamon/sugar, then flip. Add a touch of Sailor Jerry rum just to decaramelize the pan and add flavor. Float these in the punch.
Combine all ingredients in a pitcher or large punch bowl. If you don't have a measuring glass, use a pint glass and simply fill one "part" or half part or a quarter part full.
For ice, either freeze a cake-mold the night before for one big block of ice that slowly cools and melts without watering down the punch, or simply place punch bowl next to an ice bucket and individually fill each cup with ice.

Enjoy!

The Bee's Knees

BeesKnees1.jpg

Last month Sonja (the founder of UNIQUE) and Jon had an epic 3-day wedding in Joshua Tree, California. I knew Sonja loved Hendrick's Gin but had no idea how good it was myself until she served-me-up a glass of "The Bee's Knees". I was instantly hooked, as were all the guests...

After some quick research I discovered the drink originates from the Prohibition era, where the main ingredient (gin of course!) was masked by honey. Nowadays, the cocktail has many variations, but we give you the exclusive recipe from our friends at Hendrick's Gin. Trust me, you'll love this cocktail!

- 2 OZ of Hendrick's gin

- 1 OZ honey syrup (warm 2 parts honey mixed with 1 parts water in a pan until fluid)

- 1/2 OZ lemon juice

Combine above mentioned ingredients, shake well with ice, and strain into a glass. Garnish with a lemon twist if you'd like, enjoy!
