Q + A with WAAM Industries

otherwise known as “We Are Always Moving” Industries, creates spiced up versions of simple utilitarian products that we use daily but often overlook. Founders Andrew & Hanna pull inspiration from local vintage finds, flea markets, and roadside garage sales to create intentional goods for those that are always on the move.

What did you do before starting your business?

Andrew & I have pretty funny and seemingly unrelated back stories. Andrew worked as a gallery registrar in New York City and I managed a shoe store in Herald Square. On days/evenings off we were hustling to make our Etsy shop a success before moving 'home' to Minnesota.

What does your typical work day look like?

For us everyday is ever-changing. The things that stick to the routine are breakfast, lunch & dinner. We both cook a lot, so our days revolve around this - even when traveling. Our work days may be 6 hours or they may be 16, but we always are certain to be well fed and motivated.

What’s the most important thing you attribute to your success?

Anthony Burrill's poster 'WORK HARD & BE NICE TO PEOPLE' certainly resonates with me. I think a lot of doors have opened for us by being passionate, hard working & kind. We've met so many wonderful people along the way who have opened doors and brought us amazing opportunities.

Describe a memory or an a-ha moment you had and how you felt?

Our first big break was when Etsy interviewed us in 2017. By then we were working hard on the brand, but had little press or moments where we were thinking 'we are doing it!' When we saw this hit the web it truly hit home.

What is the hardest thing about being a business owner?

Your work is never done! There will always be another email to send, inquiry to respond to, project to complete, but that is the beauty in it! It's hard work, but I wouldn't change it for the world.

Seeing other brands succeed is always our driving force. I’m so passionate and excited for them, and that energy keeps me motivated to do the same.
